FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN
Children are increasingly travelling alone, with their family and with their siblings. Our aim is to make their flying experience as smooth, easy and pleasant as possible.
Before the flight
When you book a trip, we recommend that you inform us whether you would like some special service for a child passenger, such as a child meal or a baby basket during the flight. Many airports, such as Helsinki-Vantaa, have children’s play rooms and baby care facilities. We will do our best to board families with children before other passengers.
Baby buggies are transported together with other checked baggage in the hold of the aircraft. When seen necessary, a small, light and fully collapsible baby buggy with small wheels may at some airports (for example at Helsinki-Vantaa when travelling on scheduled flights), be used to the departure gate. Due to lack of space, it is not always possible to stow the buggy in the cabin. Therefore it is important to be in good time at the gate, where the buggy is taken to the hold of the aircraft. At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport there are baby buggies supplied by the Finnish Civil Aviation Administration, which can be used up to the gate.
During the flight
Seats are not reserved for infants of less than two years of age. On wide-bodied aircraft, a few baby basket are available for infants, and the basket should be reserved in advance. The basket is fastened to the wall of the aircraft or placed on the in the legroom during the flight. The child can sleep and lie down in the basket with the cover zipped up. During take-off, landing and turbulence, infants sit on their carer’s lap and are given their own seatbelt (1 infant/adult). An infant using the baby basket may not weigh more than 15 kg/33 lbs.
Children’s meals can be ordered in Business Class on scheduled international flights. Jars of baby food are available on scheduled European and long-haul flights (not on ATR aircraft). A care table suitable for changing diapers can be found in a number of the toilets on the larger types of aircraft.
During the flight, children are given their own entertainment material and activity packs. On aircraft that have video/audio equipment, children can enjoy their own music and cartoon films during longer flights. During the flight, the cabin staff attends to families with children and their needs, enquiring, for example, about a suitable time for the serving of meals.
Passengers under 18 years of age have their own Finnair Junior Plus Club, which children can join on Finnair’s scheduled flights. Membership forms can be obtained from cabin staff.
After the flight
On arrival, the aim is to deliver the buggies to the passenger already at the aircraft door. At some airports this is, however, restricted due to local security regulations, and in such cases the buggies will be delivered at the baggage claim together with other checked baggage.
